Correcting Shank Golf Shots
No Shanks!… No Shanks!…
It is probably the most dreaded thing any golfer can experience and it is the shanks!
I’ve seen people panic after hitting a shank and do everything or anything humanly possible to try hit the next shot off the toe of the club…what causes the shanks? What are some ways to cure a shank?
Let’s get right to it…
Causes of the Shanks
There are a number of things which lead to a shank and here are the main causes:
- You are standing too close to the ball at address (and in turn at impact)
- Your weight moves towards the ball at impact
- The lower half of your body slides through impact, which causes clubface to lag and be open when striking the ball
- Your swing path is too much from out-to-in on downswing
- Or on other hand your swing plane is extremely flat (ie. The club is more parallel with ground compared to perpendicular to ground)
Cures for the Shanks
Besides mentally being strong enough to overcome a shank
here are some other options!
- The weight should be centred on balls of feet at address
- Try to maintain your spine angle through the ball better…the moment your posture straightens you move slightly closer to the ball through impact
- Check your ball position at address…to do this stand tall at address, bend chest over from waist until in a good position and drop your hands….now with a club in your hands this is the correct address position.
- A bit of a longer process, but straighten your swing path…the moment you can start attacking the ball slightly from the inside it will stand you in good stead to striking it out the hosel.
