Save Shots with Perfect Pitching

Perfect Pitching that’ll make you shout “Getinthehole” on every shot!
Pitching is one area of the game where most players are merely average and get the ball to within 20 feet from the hole from 40 metres away. We’re going to be getting you thinking of pitching it to within 6 feet every time, the pitch shot ranges from about 30 – 70 metres from the flag and I hardly ever see golfers practising this shot and I honestly wonder why not?..after all this is one area in particular that can shave shots off your score. This can be as a result of pitching it very close on a Par 5 giving a great chance for birdie on a hole you couldn’t reach in two or it could be saving par on a par 4 where you missed the fairway, hit it out to 60 metres from the green and pitched it to within 6 feet. Let’s get started with some
Getinthehole key points to adopt when pitching.
- Ball Position should be middle of stance – This gives the best chance possible of getting the wedge back to the ball at the bottom of the swing arc without manipulating the hands or arms, his will help give a consistent strike.
- Swing with your core – By this I mean not swinging with your arms or hands only, you need to concentrate on the rotation of your core on the backswing and then the follow through where your stomach will face the target. Doing this will help move your hands, arms and legs together and in the correct sequence.
- Keep backswing and follow through the same length – Do not have a full backswing and half a follow through! …it is far easier to judge distance by having a similar length swing and will also be more consistent in the long run.
- Release the clubhead through the ball – I don’t mean hooking the ball through impact, but rather returning the clubhead to square at impact and fractionally closing on follow through. So many players try to ‘help’ the ball up in the air having a high finish and open clubface through impact with a pitch, which doesn’t help!…if you strike your pitch well it will check up when hitting the green anyway so make it easier for yourself.
- Land the ball 3 metres short of the pin – Unless you have zero green to work with short of the flag then aim to land the ball 3 metres short as 90% of the time the ball will take a hop of a couple of metres and then check up about 3 metres from its pitchmark.
To Recap Perfect Pitching in 5 points
- Ball Position middle of stance
- Swing with the core of body
- Backswing & follow through same length
- Release clubhead through ball
- Aim to land ball 3 metres short of flag
