Make More 5 Foot Putts
It’s a common question amongst most amateur golfers….How do I make more 5 foot putts?
It is also common knowledge that you ‘drive for show and putt for dough!’ as you can always get away with a Par or even Birdie by missing a fairway, but not by missing a short putt. Luke Donald is one of the best in the game in this department and he showed this by not three putting in 449 holes of golf!….in simpler terms that is almost 25 rounds! this comes down to being solid from within 5 feet of the hole.
Putting is the most important part of the game so let’s get right to it and get you sinking more of those short ones and lowering your score!
1. Read The Line Properly – By this I don’t mean merely behind the ball,if there is any doubt whatsoever then take a look at all angles before addressing your ball. This will give you more confidence in your stroke by not being tentative and unsure.
2. Rhythm & Tempo – Very important in being consistent, keep the same length backstroke and follow-through on every putt inside 5 feet. Obviously if you’re putting straight downhill then treat it like a 3 foot putt
3. Head Still & Hands Steady! – it is imperative to keep your head still especially through impact as the second you look up, it’s far easier to push your putt. By keeping your hands steady I mean adopt a secure grip and focus on keeping your hands moving towards the hole and NOT rotating your hands at any time in your stroke…
4. Stroke it! – Aim your putter face at intended line & stroke the ball…hitting the ball will not help in sinking more short putts & that is a promise!
Methods to use when determining a line:
1. Look if the green is higher on a particular side of a cup.
2. If a green has dark and light streaks on it this means it’s grainy and hence will be faster down grain and slower into the grain.
3. Inspect the cup and see if its worn out on the lip of the cup…if it is on the right hand side for example this means the putt is breaking towards the right and balls are striking that part of the cup more than anywhere else.
4. If there is a water hazard bordering the green, more often than not a ball will break towards the water as obviously that’s lower than the green itself.
We wish you good golfing and a higher strike rate of short putts!…you will make more 5 foot putts so if you have any good stories then please let us know?
Cheers!
